Commission a Portrait

I produce portraits in either pastels or oils from photographs., generally using the customer's own images, but can also take them for you.  I  use these reference photos as they are or can create a photoshop montage of all the preferred parts from two or more photos, providing the lighting is similar, such as swapping backgrounds or expressions. Have a look at the reference photos on the Portrait page to see some examples of what can be done.

Prices vary depending on the size and complexity of the image, the number of people and whether they are full figure or head and shoulders, -so it is quite difficult to state a definitive price.
As a rough guide pastel paintings start at £250. This would be for one figure, head and shoulders with a simple background. The equivalent oil painting would be priced at £350.
If you send a photo to me by email with what you require I will send you a quote. No obligation.

The process starts by sending your photo via email with an idea of what you want, and I will send you a rough idea of what I can do and quote a price. If you are happy with this I will then produce a more detailed plan, sketching out the idea either by hand or digitally depending on what you requested. After this stage has been agreed I do ask for a deposit of about 30% before starting the actual artwork.

The cost of framing is met by the customer but can be arranged by myself. Note that pastel paintings need to to be framed under glass to protect the surface.

If you have a special date in mind for your artwork to be completed the timing is important. Currently I need at least three months notice for an oil painting and two for a pastel.

All the materials I use are Artist Quality which will last over time. Primarily Unison and Sennelier soft pastels on acid-free cotton rag paper such as mi-teintes or tiziano. Oils are painted with Winsor and Newton or Old Holland artists colour on quality triple-primed canvas.
